The ReplicatorActivity is a really useful way to create multiple instances of an activity or sequence of activities. Basically, you provide a collection (any collection that supports the IList interface), and the defined activities are executed for each item in the collection. The activities that you place in the ReplicatorActivity are considered template activities. As the ReplicatorActivity is executed, a copy of its child activities is created. For example, if you had three items in the collection and a single CodeActivity in the ReplicatorActivity, the workflow would create three instances of the CodeActivity object. All the properties that you define at design time are also copied to each of the instances. When you define the method to handle the ExecuteCode event, for example, all three instances will execute the same method. However, each will have their own copy of the local variables. It is equivalent to three different threads calling the same method. The code is shared; the data is not. The CreateTask (and the CreateTaskWithContentType) activity has properties such as TaskId and TaskProperties that need to be different for each instance. If you specify these in the workflow designer, then all copies will have the same value. We worked around this in the previous chapter because the ReplicatorActivity was executed sequentially, and before each instance, the bound members, taskId and taskProperties, were modified. Drag a ReplicatorActivity to the workflow, and change the name to createTasks. In the Properties window, select the InitialChildData property, and click the ellipsis. In the dialog box that is displayed, select the existing ChildData property, as shown in Figure 11-13.

There is a tweak we will make to the way that collisions are handled with solid objects, as essentially there are two types of collisions: those with Flynn s feet and those with the rest of his body. Caution Note that none of the event handlers is implemented. In 10, you used the ChildInitialized event to pass in the instance data, which contained the person who the task was to be assigned to. When you re working with a single instance of each task, you can have one method set a class member, and then a subsequent method can access it. The ChildInitialized handler could store the AssignedTo value, and the CreateTask_Invoking handler could then read it. This does not work when dealing with multiple instances. The instance data passed in to the ChildInitialized handler is not useful in this scenario.
